The Linden Trio first formed in 2004 with violinist, Marina Marsden (Principal Violin, Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Justine Marsden (violist, Sydney Symphony Orchestra ) and Timothy Nankervis (cellist, Sydney Symphony Orchestra). The Trio performed for ABC Classic FM’s Sunday Live series, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, St James Church Lunchtime series and Sydney Mozart Society. Since its formation, the group has been joined by a number of guest artists and has performed in various augmented combinations such as piano quartets, string quintets and sextets, often for Sydney Symphony Chamber Players engagements. The Linden String Quartet recorded three CDs of Australian music for Wirripang: Heaven-Haven (Phillip Wilcher)(2014), Movement (Horace Keats)(2014) and Sea and Landscapes (Brennan Keats)(2023).
Marina Marsden Marina Marsden, violin
Marina Marsden is currently a Principal 2nd Violin with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, having joined the SSO in 1995 as Assistant Concertmaster.
Marina is an active soloist and chamber musician, appearing frequently in Sydney Symphony Chamber Players series and is a founding member of the Linden Trio and Linden String Quartet. As soloist, she has performed with the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Canberra Symphony and Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. Marina has recorded for Tall Poppies, Move Records, Wirripang Publications, ABC Classics labels and the AMEB, and was the 1999 recipient of an Australian Music Centre National Award.
Marina studied violin at the Sydney Conservatorium with Alice Waten and from 1985, assisted by several scholarships, studied for a Performer’s Diploma in Vienna with Gerhard Schulz (Alban Berg Quartet).
In 1990 Marina became a Concertmaster of the Bruckner Orchestra in Austria and Melbourne Symphony’s Associate Concertmaster from 1992 until 1994. In 1997, Marina travelled to Austria and the USA on a Churchill Fellowship.She travelled to Europe in 2013 for advanced study in violin playing and mentoring, assisted by a Sydney Symphony Michael and Mary Whelan Trust Scholarship. She has performed on several occasions in the Australian World Orchestra.
Justine Marsden Justine Marsden, viola
Violist Justine Marsden has been a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 1990 following a position with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Prior to this, she studied at the Sydney Conservatorium with Winifred Durie and Alex Todicescu and went on to pursue post graduate studies in Berlin with Wolfram Christ, then Principal Violist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. During her years in Europe, Justine played in the Berlin Philharmonic and Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestras and performed as soloist with the Baden-Badener Orchestra, as Principal Violist with the Berliner Kammeroper and was a member of Berlin Ensemble Oriol.
On her return to Australia, she has played as member and soloist with the Brandenburg Orchestra as well as numerous chamber ensembles including the Novalis Quartet, Kuringai Virtuosi, Grevillea Ensemble, Linden String Trio and Quartet, and Ensemble Aspherical, and has recorded for Tall Poppies and Wirripang Publications. In 2004, 2010 and 2013 after completing a psychology degree, Justine pursued research in Europe related to performance enhancement and musicians' health. In addition to performing full time as an orchestral and chamber musician, she specialises in teaching musicians the Flow Method to enhance their performing ability.
Timothy Nankervis Timothy Nankervis, cello
Timothy Nankervis, is a member of the cello section of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has won numerous awards for cello solo, and for chamber music as a member of the acclaimed Seraphim Trio. As an active chamber musician, Tim has performed extensively with Seraphim Trio nationally and internationally. He also performs regularly as a guest artist with various ensembles.
Tim has performed widely throughout Australia as a soloist, and has broadcast regularly for the ABC and MBS-FM radio stations across the country. He has performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Brahms Double Concerto with orchestras in Sydney and Queensland, and he has performed as soloist with Orchestra Victoria, playing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo’ Variations.
Tim performs regularly with the Australian World Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed casually with the Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s. He has taught cello and chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and tutors regularly for Sydney Youth Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.
Tim completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Sydney with Lois Simpson and graduated from Melbourne University with a Masters of Music degree with Nelson Cooke. He has also studied at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, and in London with William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch.
Dr Jeanell Carrigan AM Dr. Jeanell Carrigan AM, piano
Dr. Jeanell Carrigan is currently an Associate Professor in the Collaborative Piano Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She has performed throughout Australia and Europe as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative duo partner. Her area of research is Australian solo piano repertoire and, more recently, the piano music composed by early 20th Century Australian women composers. In February 2025, she released her thirty-fifth CD of solo Australian piano and chamber works.
Her publications include several books: Post-1970 Australian Piano Music (1997); Australian Piano Music of the last Twenty-Five Years (2006); Composing against the Tide (2016); A Musical Missionary. The Life and Music of Dulcie Holland (2020), (co-authored with Dr. Rita Crews OAM) Australian Piano Music 1850-1950 (2021); The Music of Meta Overman. Queen of colour and Fantasy (2021), Amayzing May. The Life and Work of May Howlett (2024); A National Treasure.
